About the work
This is a black-and-white pen drawing of the South Gate of Angkor Thom, an ancient city in Cambodia. The artwork showcases a richly detailed jungle scene with large trees and dense foliage framing a stone gate adorned with the iconic face of Avalokiteshvara or a bodhisattva, a hallmark of Khmer architecture. A path leads through the gate, along which elephants with riders are seen walking toward the viewer, adding life and historical context to the scene. On the right side, a row of stone statues, likely depicting gods and demons holding a naga (serpent), flanks the causeway leading up to the gate, referencing the Hindu myth of the Churning of the Ocean of Milk. The overall composition emphasises the harmony between nature and the grandeur of ancient architecture.
